A Bit of History

In May 1914 seven women met together to enjoy one another's company. They had no special purpose in mind. The seven women were Maude Lester, Sarah Thorp Heald, Ann Thorp, Lillian Bohlke, Belle Hathaway, Olga Savig and Hannah Savig. Later, Hadda Dandanell, Anna Mattson and Ella Wils joined the group.

When the Lake Hubert School House was built during this time, the ladies found a purpose for their meeting. They had a supper and a social and bought a bell for the school. They met at one another's homes on a regular basis, purchased a bookcase and pictures for the school and during World War I, they were busy with Red Cross work.

During the depression of 1929-30, the ladies pieced and finished seven quilts to be given to needy people. They altered and mended over 700 garments for the poor. A gasoline stove was purchased for the school. For two winters, they bought cases of canned soup for the children's lunches. They paid for glasses for a woman who needed them badly. They paid ten dollars a month for groceries for a needy family.

In l917, the record shows that the group called themselves the Mother's club. In that same year, the name was changed to Women's Club of Lake Hubert. In 1926, it became the Lake Hubert Women's Club.

Meetings continued to be held at the homes of members. As the years went on, the Club increased their donations. They gave to Brainerd State Hospital, CARE, Deerwood Sanitorium, Pine River Nursing Home, as well as Bethany and Good Samaritan Nursing Homes.

Recent donations from the Club include: Nisswa Food Shelf, Mid-Minnesota Women's Shelter, First Response, Nisswa School-Deep Portage Project, which support local students for special educational experiences; memorials given to Nisswa Garden Club, and Christmas gifts to a local family in need.

One hundred and seven years after those seven hard-working women first met in 1914, members of the Lake Hubert Women's Club meet each month to continue their dedication to serving charitable and educational needs of the community.
