Lake Hubert Conservation Association

Lake Hubert, Minnesota

Call to action!

Read the notice from the LHCA Board below and consider writing to Governor Walz!

For more than 10 years, the state legislature has provided funds to help pay for local Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) preventive programs and for AIS inspectors, including at the Lake Hubert Public Landing.  Governor Walz is proposing to cut this funding in half this coming fiscal year and its phase out in 2029.

This action could likely result in an increasing spread of AIS in Crow Wing County and many others.

One of our organizational partners, MN Lakes and Rivers, is asking its members to write the governor asking him to restore AIS funding and we are asking you to help out.

Please consider sending a brief note to this address:

Gov. Tim Walz
 130 State Capitol
75 Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
 St. Paul, MN 55155.

Dear Governor Walz,

Please reconsider your proposal to reduce county funding for Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) prevention. These funds help pay for AIS inspectors and other prevention programs. Reduced funding could likely result in an increase in the spread of AIS throughout the state.

Thank you,
(name and lake address)

NEWS RELEASE!

Starry Stonewort confirmed in Middle Cullen Lake in Crow Wing County

Starry Stonewort is an aquatic invasive species from Western Europe and Asia that was first found in Minnesota in 2015. It creates thick mats of vegetation and is destructive to water recreational activities and native habitat. Until now, it has been considered rare in Minnesota and has not been in our area. It can be controlled but it cannot be eradicated. This creates new urgency about cleaning any watercraft properly before bringing it into our lake. We plan to research what other steps can be taken to monitor Lake Hubert for it, and to educate the public about the risks of AIS.

What’s happening at the lake?

We finally have about 8” of snow in early-mid February, 2025!

We had northern lights on Sunday, August 11, 2024!

Thanks again to the Wieland sisters for hosting the summer social! It was a great success, in spite of the torrential rain that took us indoors after the first hour.

We had beautiful weather for the July 4, 2024 boat parade. It was great fun!

The 2024 Annual Meeting was a great success! Thanks to Janet Webster for her years of dedicated service to the LHCA Board!

We had 3 loon families with 5 babies on the lake in 2024!

The first babies hatched in the northeast lake platform on May 31, and one was lost to predation or other natural events. The second pair of chicks hatched on June 9 in the Sunset Bay platform, so we had 3 babies on the lake. Then, in early September, we did a loon count, and there is a third family with 2 more babies that likely came over from nearby Bass Lake.
